E-Bikes and Lithium-Ion Batteries: An In-Depth Analysis of Working Principles
I. Core Working Principle of Lithium-Ion Batteries
As the power core of e-bikes, lithium-ion batteries rely on electrochemical redox reactions for energy supply. A typical lithium-ion battery consists of a positive electrode (usually lithium-containing compounds such as lithium cobalt oxide or lithium iron phosphate), a negative electrode (mostly graphite), an electrolyte (lithium-ion conductor), and a separator (to prevent short circuits between the positive and negative electrodes).
During charging, an external power supply applies voltage, driving lithium ions (Li⁺) in the positive electrode material to detach from the crystal lattice, migrate to the negative electrode through the electrolyte and separator, and intercalate between graphite layers to complete "energy storage". Meanwhile, electrons flow to the negative electrode through an external circuit to maintain charge balance. The discharge process is the reverse: lithium ions deintercalate from the negative electrode, return to the positive electrode along the electrolyte, and electrons flow through electrical devices such as the motor via the external circuit, forming an electric current to drive the e-bike. In this process, the chemical energy of the positive and negative electrode materials is converted into electrical energy.
Lithium-ion batteries offer advantages such as high energy density (storing more electrical energy per unit weight/volume), low self-discharge rate (minimal power loss when idle), and long cycle life (up to over 1,000 charge-discharge cycles), making them an ideal power source for e-bikes.

II. Power Transmission and Lithium-Ion Battery Coordination Mechanism in E-Bikes
The power system of an e-bike uses a lithium-ion battery as the energy hub, cooperating with components such as a motor, controller, and sensors to form a closed-loop workflow.
- Energy Output Control: The controller serves as the core hub, receiving direct current (DC) output from the lithium-ion battery. Based on the rider's operations (e.g., twisting the throttle) and sensor signals (e.g., speed, load), it adjusts the magnitude and frequency of the output current to achieve stepless speed regulation.
- Motor Driving Principle: Most e-bikes use brushless DC motors (BLDC). The controller converts the DC power from the lithium-ion battery into three-phase alternating current (AC), which drives the stator windings inside the motor to generate a rotating magnetic field, thereby rotating the rotor. The motor speed is positively correlated with the current frequency, and the torque is proportional to the current magnitude, ensuring that the power response matches the riding needs.
- Energy Recovery (for Some Models): When going downhill or braking, the motor can work in reverse as a "generator", converting kinetic energy into electrical energy. This energy is fed back to the lithium-ion battery for charging through the controller, extending the range. This process also relies on the reversible charge-discharge characteristics of lithium-ion batteries.

III. Key Technical Features and Safety
The charge-discharge efficiency of lithium-ion batteries (usually over 90%) directly affects the range of e-bikes. The Battery Management System (BMS) is the core to ensuring safety and performance: it real-time monitors the battery's voltage, temperature, and current, prevents abnormal conditions such as overcharging, over-discharging, and short circuits, extends battery life, and avoids safety risks.
In the power coordination design of e-bikes, the voltage of the lithium-ion battery (commonly 36V or 48V) must be accurately matched with the motor power (250W-1000W) to ensure stable power output while avoiding energy waste. Ultimately, a complete closed loop of "efficient energy storage - on-demand energy release - safe operation" is achieved.
